SEO for Lead Generation Agencies: What 289 AI Articles Really Did for One Agency's Traffic (2026)

We took a lead generation agency's site from almost no organic traffic to about 6,000 visits a month with 289 AI-written articles, and got it cited in 170 Google AI Overview answers along the way. That is the case study in the video below, and the numbers are real. But in the video I say the traffic "is going down a bit right now and I'll tell you why in a bit", and then I never do. This article is where I do, because the reason is the most useful part of the case for anyone running SEO for a lead generation agency.

The short version: the method worked exactly as designed. Publish at volume, get indexed, get ranked, get cited. The gap was targeting. The pages that pulled the traffic were about login errors and Instagram profile viewers, read mostly from India and Indonesia, on a site that sells lead generation to plumbers, roofers and SaaS founders. Volume without a keyword plan finds whatever is easy to rank for, and what is easy to rank for is rarely what your buyers search. Here is the whole picture, screen by screen.

The numbers in Ahrefs, 16 October 2026

Ahrefs overview for the agency's domain: 205 AI responses across all platforms, 170 AI Overviews on 7 pages, AI Mode 32, Perplexity 3, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok 0; DR 31, 14.4K backlinks from 3.4K referring domains; 108 organic keywords, 2.2K organic traffic worth $529; traffic analytics 11.5K visits and 10.2K unique visitors in 30 days
The Ahrefs overview at the time of recording, with six-month changes. Read the AI responses table row by row, not the headline.

Ahrefs monthly organic traffic chart for the agency's site: flat near zero through 2025, rising from January 2026 to a peak above 6K around June 2026, then falling back to under 3K by October 2026
Two years of monthly organic traffic. Nothing until January 2026, a peak just above 6K in early summer, and a slide back towards 2K since.

Three corrections to my own voiceover before we go further. First, "6,000 a month" is the peak, in early summer 2026; the site is at about 2,200 organic visits now, and the customer table I show later in the video records it as 5 → 2,868. Second, I say the brand is mentioned across AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Grok. The Ahrefs card I am pointing at lists six platforms and shows numbers for three: 170 AI Overview responses, 32 in AI Mode, 3 in Perplexity, and zero in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok. Third, the 11.5K "visits" figure is Ahrefs' estimate of all traffic to the site in 30 days, not organic traffic; the agency clearly has other channels, which is normal for a business that sells paid ads.

What the card does show, and what I stand behind: a domain that had nothing in 2025 now holds DR 31, ranks 54 keywords in the top three (up 24 in six months), and appears in 170 AI Overview answers on seven of its pages. The keyword count and top-three count are both still rising while traffic falls, which is the pattern of a long tail being built underneath a spike that is deflating. The spike is the story.

The 289 articles, and the table they sit in

This is one row of the customer table we built for does AI SEO work and walked through again in is Arvow worth it. The agency's row is the last one, and it is the one with no features used except the articles themselves.

CustomerWhat they used in ArvowOrganic visits, before → after
Site 135 articles · 1 AutoBlog · AI tracker · 48 backlinks · SEO report6,112 → 73,498 (12×)
Site 2429 articles · 43 AutoBlogs · 80 editor runs · AI tracker · 56 backlinks · SEO report1,499 → 10,847 (7.2×)
Site 364 articles · 5 AutoBlogs · 1,252 editor runs · AI tracker1,151 → 7,007 (6.1×)
Site 42,803 articles · 5 AutoBlogs · 684 editor runs · AI tracker · SEO report253 → 4,472 (17.7×)

The lead generation agency289 articles5 → 2,868 (574×)

The multiple looks enormous because the starting point was five visits. The more honest comparison is with Site 1: 35 articles, one AutoBlog, 48 backlinks and the AI tracker took a site from 6K to 73K. Volume is not what separates the rows. Using the whole loop, and pointing it at the right keywords, is.

The agency's homepage hero: #1 Lead Generation Agency For Growing Businesses, drive growth for SaaS founders with consistent leads, 23,000+ booked calls and leads generated, a Yep I Want More Leads button, and a row of review badges
The agency's homepage at the time of recording: SaaS founders, 23,000+ booked calls, one call to action. When we re-checked on 26 October 2026 the title tag had been repositioned to plumbers, roofers and local pros.
One of the agency's blog posts, about Insta Looker anonymous Instagram viewers, with headings, a phone image, bullet lists and a sticky Book Your Free Discovery Call Worth $500 card in the sidebar
A typical post: structured, illustrated, with the agency's "$500 discovery call" offer pinned beside it. The format is right. The topic is Instagram profile viewers.

The articles themselves are what I say they are in the video: simple, well-structured posts with headings, images, internal and external links and a video embed, each one bylined by the agency's founder and dated, each with a sticky "Book Your Free Discovery Call, Worth $500" card beside it. When we re-checked the site on 26 October 2026 the sitemap listed 364 blog URLs and posts were still going up (the latest we saw was dated 4 October). The machine is running. Now look at what it produced.

What the 6,000 visits were made of

Ahrefs Top Pages for the agency's blog: the top page, understanding the invalid credentials meaning, carries 1,781 visits or 80.8% of traffic with top keywords kredensial tidak valid and invalid credentials meaning; second is an insta looker guide with 128 visits and 906 referring domains; third is a second invalid-credentials page with 95 visits ranking for invalid credentials hindi meaning
Top Pages, 16 October versus 16 September 2026. One page is 80.8% of the site's organic traffic, and its top keyword is Indonesian.

Filter the Top Pages report to the blog and the whole case changes shape:

  • 80.8% of the traffic is one page. "Understanding the Invalid Credentials Meaning" brings 1,781 of the 2,200 visits. Its top keywords are "kredensial tidak valid" (Indonesian, 3,500 searches a month) and "invalid credentials meaning" (6,100).
  • Number two is an Instagram profile-viewer guide ("Insta Looker") at 128 visits, which also shows 906 referring domains on its own. A how-to post about anonymous Instagram viewing does not earn 906 editorial links; that count is a flag, not a trophy.
  • Number three is a second invalid-credentials page, ranking for "invalid credentials hindi meaning".
  • Below those: guides to the Parquet file format, campaign-name examples, an Ahrefs Data Studio connector. Useful pages. Not one of them is about generating leads for a plumber.
Ahrefs organic traffic by location: India 704 visits (−2.4K) 32%, Indonesia 563 (+503) 25.6%, United States 526 (−600) 23.9%
Where the visitors are. India and Indonesia together are 58% of the traffic; the United States, where the agency's customers are, is 24%.

The location table explains the chart. India is 32% of the traffic and fell by 2,400 visits in six months; Indonesia is 25.6% and rose by 503; the United States is 23.9% and fell by 600. The spike to 6,000 was the invalid-credentials page ranking in India, and the slide since is that page losing ground there. The agency's buyers, meanwhile, are American contractors and founders, who were never more than a quarter of the visits. That is why the traffic value is $529 a month for 2,200 visits, and why I would not call this result a win however many times the multiple gets quoted.

To be clear about what this is not: it is not evidence that AI content does not rank, or that the articles are bad. They rank, they get cited, and they are structurally fine. It is evidence that 289 articles pointed at no particular buyer will rank for whatever is easiest, and that "easiest" for an English-language site in 2026 often means an informational query from a country you do not sell to. We have written about the difference between traffic and useful traffic before, in is AI content bad for SEO; this is the cleanest example of it I have.

The backlink numbers need the same reading

Backlinks went from almost nothing to 14.4K from 3.4K referring domains in six months, and DR went down seven points in the same window. Authority does not fall while 3,000 new domains link to you unless the domains are weak. The overview card cannot tell you where those links came from or what they are worth; the 906 domains on the Instagram post suggest at least some of them are scraped or syndicated copies. If you run a site like this, open the referring-domains report before quoting the backlink count, the same way we read the change column in our own backlink agent write-up.

SEO for a lead generation agency: what to do differently

A lead generation agency sells leads, so its own SEO has one job: bring in the people who buy leads. Everything that follows comes straight from the gap between this site's traffic and its homepage.

1. Build the keyword plan from the buyer, not from what ranks

The agency's live site now positions itself for plumbers, roofers and local pros, and it has dedicated pages for legal firms and franchisers. The articles should have been built outward from those pages: "how much does a plumbing lead cost", "roofing lead generation companies", "google ads for contractors", "franchise marketing agency", and the comparison and pricing queries around them. These are the buying intent keywords that convert, and they are the ones a competitor-gap pass surfaces when you give it the right competitors. Our step-by-step for turning that into a queue is in how to build an SEO content plan.

2. Put the business in the knowledge base before you publish

The invalid-credentials page is what you get when the model is asked to write about "topics people search" with nothing about the business behind it. Load the knowledge base with the services, the verticals, the case studies ("23,000+ booked calls" is a case study waiting to be written), the pricing and the objections, and the same 289 articles come out about lead generation for contractors. That is also what gets a brand recommended in AI answers rather than just cited for a login error; the mechanics are in how to increase AI visibility.

3. Write the vertical pages the buyers actually read

A plumber deciding whether to hire a lead generation agency reads about SEO for plumbers, Google Ads for plumbers, and what a lead should cost. Pages like our SEO for plumbers and SEO for roofers guides are the shape of content that pulls that reader in; an agency should own that shelf for every vertical it sells to.

4. Target the country, and measure leads, not visits

Set the market in the keyword research, check the location table monthly, and judge the blog on discovery calls booked, not sessions. Traffic value is a decent proxy when you cannot see the CRM: a page worth $14 a month in equivalent ad spend is not feeding a $500 discovery call. For the broader playbook on using SEO to generate leads, our guide to SEO lead generation services covers the funnel end to end.

5. Find the seven pages the AI Overviews already cite, and make more like them

170 AI Overview responses on seven pages is the one number on the card that is unambiguously good. Those seven pages are answering questions well enough that Google quotes them. The move is to identify them, see which are anywhere near the agency's service, and build the next batch of articles in that format on buyer questions. How we track which pages get cited, and by which platform, is in how to get mentioned in AI search.

What the software does, shown on our own account

Everything in the video after the case study is Arvow's own project, not the agency's, so the numbers below are ours.

Arvow Automatic Backlinks for arvow.com: 257 backlinks received from the network, 126 unique sources, 102 pages linked; settings with receiving preference Off, Relevance (selected) or Volume, block NSFW backlinks on, sitemap URL arvow.com/sitemap.xml, free account backlinks per day 1, project maximum backlinks per day, and a note that additional verified backlinks cost 15 credits each

The received list, late September to mid October 2026, with the source domains blurred in the video. The DR column is printed as it appears: mostly single digits, a 33 and a 38.

The automatic backlink network places links to your pages from other members' articles as they publish. Our project has received 257 links from 126 domains to 102 pages. I say "DR 47" in the video; the page of the list shown here is mostly 0s, 1s and a few teens with a 33 and a 38, and I would rather you saw that than took the one number. The useful control is the receiving preference, Relevance or Volume, plus a daily cap; verified links beyond the free quota cost 15 credits each.

Arvow Chat with the prompt what are some opportunities of traffic my competitors are doing that I'm not that AI can do, and the agent's steps: noticing a potential typo, List projects, Search Console, Competition Analysis, Using tools
The chat, typos and all. It lists the project, pulls Search Console and runs a competition analysis before answering.

What the chat can pull in and what it can act on. This is the page I scroll to at the end of the video.

The AI SEO chat is where the keyword-plan problem above gets fixed in practice: ask it what traffic your competitors get that you do not, and it reads Search Console, your SEO data and the competitors' pages before it answers. It connects to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Ghost and Framer, which is how the agency's 289 articles were published to its site without anyone pasting them.

Arvow's own LLM brand monitor: visibility 55% across all LLMs, sentiment +27 positive, 5 prompts monitored; sentiment breakdown per model for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, and a flat sentiment-over-time line from 10 to 16 October
Our brand monitor: 55% visibility, +27 sentiment, five prompts, per-model breakdown. The banner above these cards said "Monitoring paused" on the day of recording, which is why the line is flat. Resume yours.

Last, the brand monitor, which is the tool I would point the agency at next: it tracks whether your brand, and your competitors', shows up in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok for the prompts your buyers ask, and how positively. Ours shows 55% visibility and +27 sentiment on five prompts, and, in the interest of showing the whole screen, it was paused the week I recorded. The AI-mentions column of the Ahrefs card is the free version of this; the monitor is how you find out which prompts you are missing.

FAQ

Did the 289 AI articles work?

They did what articles can do: the site went from near zero to a 6,000-visit peak, 108 ranking keywords, 54 in the top three, and 170 AI Overview citations. What they did not do is bring in buyers, because the pages that won rank for "invalid credentials" and "insta looker" in India and Indonesia, not for lead generation in the United States. That is a targeting failure, and it is the fixable part.

Why did the traffic fall from 6,000 to 2,200?

One page carried 80% of the traffic, and its traffic from India fell by 2,400 visits in six months. When a single informational page is the whole result, the result moves with that page. A spread of buyer-intent pages in the right country does not swing like that.

What should a lead generation agency write about?

The questions its buyers ask before hiring it: what a lead costs in their trade, which channels work for contractors, how to judge an agency, what to expect in the first 90 days, and comparisons of the options. Build the plan from the service pages outward and keep the country filter on.

Is 14,400 backlinks in six months good?

Not on its own. Domain Rating fell seven points over the same period, which means the new links are weak, and one how-to post showing 906 referring domains points to scraped or syndicated copies. Read the referring-domains report, not the total.
